Flying solo

Travelling on your own does bring its rewards but it certainly has its challenges too. Today was one of those days that just began with challenges all up front but has ended with an affirmation that this is why I go....

I travel with one suitcase and one smallish carry bag which can double for small shopping excursions. We all know the hassles of a suitcase too heavy but how is it that no matter how light I travel it still seems to weigh a tonne? and it doesn't get lighter the longer I'm away and the more shopping I do LOL.

Uncooperative car park payment machines, tiny car parks with impossibly tight turns, going around the round-about twice because you miss the turn, do I have enough coins to pay the peage/toll? When you have someone with you these challenges can seem easier - someone to read the instructions aloud while you push buttons, someone to help navigate, someone to count the coins, someone to say well done when you get it right. These are the little but sometimes overwhelming challenges you face when on your own. But with patience, a deep breath and laugh even on your own you can meet the challenge and win. I did today.

My reward? To arrive in Uzes. The Place aux Herbes is the centre piece of Uzes. A large ancient town square it was flower market day today and all around the central fountain were flowers and plants for sale. Yes even herbs in the Place aux Herbes - that made me smile. Uze's main feature is the historic vaulted passages around the town square where the little cafes, bistros and shops are located.

A late lunch and reward for surmounting my challenging morning - foie gras with salad, thin slices of rare roast duck breast and yes, two glasses of local verre de vin blanc.

A smile from the ageing french gentleman sitting to my left and a brief conversation. While he didn't speak English and I not French, we nonetheless agreed the weather was getting windy, that he was a local artist ( a sculptor!) while I was 'boring in IT'. He complimented me on my beautiful hair while I disagreed that he could be 76 years old! Ahhh, at last a conversation with a living frenchman! It's ok, his wife was equally charming. Later as I sat enjoying a crepe for dessert he walked past and as he did, he turned and blew me a kiss. A sweet gesture that will not be forgotten.

If you choose well where you stay becomes your home. It will welcome you in at the end of the day, provide comfort and calm and while many may miss the companionship of another, I have learnt when travelling solo, to relax and welcome the quiet, the peace and the chance to relax without intrusion. The Hostellerie Provencale is such a place.

The light is fading now. I can hear light rain pattering against the balcony door and the flower baskets waving in the wind and rain. A street light softly glows from across the street. A comforting end to a challenging day.

My realisation? If no one else is there, be your own cheer squad!
