The Sweet Life...

No one rises early in Rome. Walking to the Piazza de Popolo I was very nearly the only person onthe street. Last night real Romans were out promenading, to see and be seen. Even the dogs greeted each other politely, rubbing noses while their owners chatted. If not walking the shopping district, people sit at outdoor cafes lit and heated by flickering gas heaters, sipping wine, eating pasta. Last night I too joined in the fun and people watched admiring Italian good looks and fashion.

As I walked briskly to the meeting point, my skin prickled with the cold and I wished I had not left my scarf behind. The shop windows were generally dark and storefronts closed but up ahead a light gave me hope - a coffee shop opening its door. "Bongiorno" and I order a cappuccino - croissant? I am politely asked which I virtuously refuse...and then as I glance across the shelf laden with croissants filled with chocolate, jam or custard I give way to temptation - cannoli! At the Piazza I sit on the marble steps grateful for my first really good coffee and believing calories consumed on holidays don't count!
